چکیده

In this paper, we study the linear stability of a two-dimensional shear flow an air layer overriding water finite depth. The is considered to be infinite extent with exponential velocity profile. Three different background conditions are in finite-depth layer: quiescent background, profile and quadratic It known that cases allow for analytical treatment. We further provide solution case field: specifically consider flow-reversal profile, although result could generalized other profiles as well. role depth on growth rate Miles rippling instabilities studied each three cases. Wind-generated water waves: two overlooked mechanisms?

From research on stratospheric dynamics there has emerged what might prove to be some useful fresh ideas about the problem of water-wave generation by wind. As pointed out in an earlier contribution (1993), water waves can be systematically amplified by two irreversible, ratchet-like mechanisms that depend on spatio-temporal inhomogeneities, such as wind gustiness and wave groupiness. Neither m...

The spectrum of finite depth water waves

In this contributionwe study the spectrum of periodic traveling gravity waves on a two-dimensional fluid of finite depth. We extend the stable and highly accurate method of Transformed Field Expansions to the finite depth case in the presence of both simple and repeated eigenvalues, and then numerically simulate the changes in the spectrum as the wave amplitude is increased. We also calculate e...

Stability of gravity-capillary waves generated by a moving pressure disturbance in water of finite depth

In previous work, we investigated two-dimensional steady gravity-capillary waves generated by a localized pressure distribution moving with constant speed U in water of finite depth h . Localized solitary waves can only exist in subcritical flows where the Froude number F = U/(gh) < 1 , and were found using a combination of numerical simulations of the fully nonlinear inviscid, irrotational equ...

Generalized Stability Analysis of Wind Generated Surface Water Waves

The shear instability mechanism for generation of surface water waves (Miles 1957) is re-examined in light of the nonnormality of the underlying linear operator. The associated eigenproblem and adjoint eigenproblem are solved numerically and a clarification to previous perturbation solutions of the eigenproblem discussed. The optimal excitation problem is solved in the asymptotic limit t → ∞ an...

The impact of wind-generated bubble layer on matched field sound source localization in shallow water (Research Article)

This paper investigates the effect of the wind-generated bubble layer on the underwater sound source localization in the Persian Gulf shallow-water environment through computer simulation and the matched field processing technique. An underwater sound source of 2-10 kHz located at depths of 10, 45, and 75 m was considered at a distance of 4 km from a linear vertical receiver array. The estimati...
